Decided to do a series of Xbox Game Pass game reviews. I’m gonna pick a different game each time and post a couple of videos of them – a first impression and then another as I get a better understanding.

I picked Dreamscaper this week. TL;DR first impression was that this game concept is really cool, the elements were interesting, and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next. Read on for details.

The concept and development is really cool. You’re Cassidy, a woman who has grown apart from their family but she misses them. She falls asleep and her emotions form her dreams, so the game is fighting those elements – the first boss is simply named Fear. The developers put a lot of thought into the backgrounds, they truly look like what you would see as your environment in a dream – very realistic, but something’s definitely “off”. And they use portals to go from level to level, just like in a dream where the plot and environment can switch at a moment’s notice. They also thought of things like the currency being sand (a la the Sandman). There is also an element called Lucidity, I saw it come up a couple of times but never attained it, so I’m not sure what it does, but I enjoy that they implement the concept of a lucid dream and I can’t wait to see what it means.

The graphics look like a game that is already prepped for VR and this game would be great as an immersive experience. Game play is fun. At first I thought it was kind of simple, but I liked that it wasn’t the typical dungeon crawler game I’m used to. The controls were complicated but easy to master, the character is responsive and easy to control.

So first impression was that this was not a typical game, even though it shares the elements of using weapons to fight against small villains and then a boss. But definitely recommend trying it.
