while i agree that renting is a bit of a money pit if long-term you plan to buy a house, you could also just rent for your entire life. if you split a $2,500 bill every month with just one other person you could rent for 40 years on 600k, without the upfront cost that comes with a house. So you can have years worth of investments build up instead. ($2,500 is on the higher end according to a quick google)
it's an oversimplification but you get the point, just different types of risk, betting on your investments rather the the housing market to hold value long term.
